Basic principles of image sensors

Basic glossary

  • Pixel: picture element, size of several µm, contiguous or not

  • Pitch: interpixel distance, varies according to the sensor format

  • Format: line, interline, field, frame, full frame

  • Spatial resolution: linked to the number and size of pixels

  • Temporal resolution: linked to the acquisition frequency (fr) per second

  • Sensitivity resolution: linked to the semiconductor and the digitization in greyscale

  • Binning: pixel gathering

  • Transfer rate (in pix/s, or in octets/s): depends on the resolution and transfer rate format of one pixel

  • Sensitivity: linked to the amount of light and its color, according to the semiconductor, kind of doping and covering

  • Noise: any signal that does not take part in the electrical transcription of the image wanted
